There are many challenges around being a business owner, however one that is probably equally challenging and rewarding is that of managing people.
Hiring the best, motivated talent is simple (at times) enough, but keeping them that way is really up to you as the business owner. Let’s have a look at a few things you can consider:

1. Start with creating a productive environment
The environment your employees work in needs to be energetic, productive, fun and conducive to new ideas and team work. Allow for meetings and teambuilding events and encourage the discussion of new ideas.
Be open to suggestions and ensure that they feel they are being heard. This will also go far to gain their trust and a trusting, open and happy environment will be the most successful.
2. Genuinely thank and appreciate
A simple thank you for a job well done goes a long way in keeping staff motivated. The key is to do this sincerely and quickly as soon as a job is done either in person or over email.
It also helps to include their line manager or colleagues so that staff know that exceptional work is appreciated.
3. Involve your team and let them in on the plan
No one likes to work in an environment where many hushed meetings are held behind closed doors, changes are made without notifications and staff are merely told what to do instead of consulting with them. By letting your team and staff in on the greater picture, they will be more loyal and harder working.
For example, “we are building a company together to improve the lives of others, we can do this together, and if we phone 5 more people today that means 5 more lives have positively changed ”instead of“ have you reached your target calls for today?”
4. Create social events
Positivity feeds off of positivity. As easy as it seems, hosting social events where partners and families are welcome and where there is good food and drink are vital in fostering a motivated environment. Staff are seen as people (friends, fathers, and mothers) and not just employees and the social interaction outside of an office environment goes a long way in bonding and motivating employees.
5. Leaders set the example
As a leader in your business you determine the culture, the work ethic, the tone and the value system that permeates through your business. If you’re not happy about how customers are dealt with by your employees, look internally and ask yourself how you speak to your employees?

A respectful, calm and professional demeanour and an understanding and positive outlook will filter down into your business and create a happy and motivated environment. A good leader will always look to themselves to change before expecting anyone else to change.
Although the above seem simple to do, it is only the best companies that permanently instil these ideals into their company culture. There is no point in setting about these for a few months only to abandon them further down the line.
A great culture is built on consistency, trust from both sides, empowerment and positivity, only then can you expect to have a productive work force.
