The month of August celebrates all that is woman in South Africa and in light of this revelry we look at what women want in their careers and how to attract these talented individuals to your business.

Of course opinions may differ completely depending on who you speak to and what their priorities are but in order to attract engaged, enlightened, innovative and adaptable individuals and not just women to your business the recipe seems to be quite clear.

So is your business attracting top business people? Consider the below.

Flexibility

In today’s age of being able to work anywhere and anytime many jobs don’t require employees to sit behind a desk from 8-5. So why is this still required in some instances?

It really is not so much the flexibility that’s an issue, it’s more about trusting your employees that they are mature enough to complete their deadlines and will go above and beyond these when needed. Even when spending an entire morning in the doctors waiting rooms with a sick child.

Says Laura Reynolds, CEO of Recruitgroup; “It’s understandable that this trust is earned, but these are the types of professionals that you want in your business. The ones that can handle the pressure, the crazy balancing act, the myriad of multitasking and still keep their wits about them.”

Market related salaries

A survey commissioned by Citi and LinkedIn concluded that working women want financial stability, if not equal pay. Believe it or not, there are still industries today that pay men more than women. If your salaries are in line or above the market you have a good chance of attracting the right talent.

The right balance

We all, male and female, want more balance to our lives. So what is the right balance? This depends on the individual, but companies that offer gyms onsite, healthy canteens and flexible working hours are at least attempting to get the balance right.

I am not saying that these fancy perks are essential, but understanding that it’s important to your employees will lead to higher productivity and tenure.

Opportunities to learn 

Does your business provide opportunities to learn and grow? Are there succession plans in place? Do you allow study leave, mentorship opportunities, internships? These are all important when creating an environment that encourages innovation and high productivity levels.

Opportunities for advancement

In any business, if there is no promotional opportunity whether it’s monetary or title based, there is very little chance that a productive employee will stay that way for very long. Be sure to have clear career paths for each individual and understand the goals that they want to achieve in their careers.

Above all, what women want in their careers is to stop being analysed and judged for their gender. They want to do their job, and they want to do their job well. If you, as a business owner, provide an environment that supports this then you’re already half way there.
