In South Africa your company name has to be registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).

When you start your business, registering with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is an important first step, and it is a legal requirement. It is possible to register online:

  1. Register on the CIPC website at www.cipc.co.za
  2. Once you have completed your application process, you will need to input banking details so that payment can be made
  3. The fee is R175, and it will take up to three working days
  4. Payment must clear before you will be able to register your new business
  5. Make sure you know what type of business you are starting, so that you can select the right option
  6. Follow the prompts on the website
  7. Be sure to make a note of the tracking number, once the process is completed
  8. Signed copies of your final documentation must be delivered to CIPC
