Registering a trademark

It's important to register a trademark to ensure that nobody else copies your brand name or slogan.

  1. A trademark is a brand name or slogan that identifies and differentiates the goods and/or services of one business from another.
  2. Once a trademark is registered, nobody else can use it to represent his or her product or service.
  3. A trademark is important if your sales depend on brand recognition, or if you have strong competing brands
  4. A trademark is valid for 10 years and can be renewed by paying the specified renewal fee.
  5. When registering a trademark, it must be classified under a certain class heading (there are 45 classifications).
  6. Get legal advice. Although not required, most applicants use trademark attorneys for legal advice regarding use of their trademark, filing an application, and the likelihood of success in the registration process. Remember that not all applications proceed to registration.
